Bringing workstation Functionality to PCs

Hummingbird's X Window System development products allow you to design and port X-Window applications from UNIX or VMS to the PC platform. Included is the OSF/Motif toolkit and Hummingbird's PC X server software which provides users with a full X Window System implementation typically found on workstations. Available for the Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT (Intel, MIPS and Alpha) and OS/2 platforms, the Exceed X Development Kits (XDKs) give today's PCs powerful workstation- like functionality by transforming them into a client-host and server, all at the same time.

Functionality

  • Hummingbird's X Development Kits incorporate all the X Window System standard libraries and toolkits required to develop X applications on the PC, which include Xlib, Xt intrinsics, Xaw and Xmu. Also available are the OSF/Motif and UIL compilers in addition to sample source and sample applications.
  • Local X support permits X clients to be started and/or displayed locally, or remotely on other X servers in the network. Local X support also permits local X clients to run on stand-alone PCs with no network support.

Advantages of X development tools on a PC

Effective Use of PC Resources for the Developer
Programmers and developers can port their X-Window applications from other operating environments such as UNIX or VMS to the Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT or OS/2, platforms. With X applications resident, the PC becomes another host platform capable of distributing applications across the network.

Better Use of Workstations
Programmers may develop and test an X program on the PC before compiling it on a host system. This reduces heavy network traffic and frees up often scarce X workstations.

Capitalize on Effective Use of Time and Productivity
Development can now take place on a PC away from the workplace and outside of work hours.

Reduce the Investment in Purchasing Workstations
Smaller businesses and departments with restricted budgets can now do application development on a more readily available PC.

Teach X
Universities and educational institutions that typically have a large number of PCs can now teach the X Window System on a PC rather than on expensive X workstations. Students can continue their studies, on or off campus, on more accessible PCs.
